My #university 's math department recruits graders from fourth year students (U3+), where one (sometimes two) courses that you've taken are assigned to you, and you're paid a fixed amount (# hours as determined by instructor × C$16/hr. Yes, the university is cheap...). Here's the problem: I've supposedly taken the course I'm grading, but how I had it was completely different from how it is now... It feels like it's taking me more effort to grade than to take the course...

@strypey I think the "prompt opt-in" he's considering now is good, though it is still unclear how he can be rid of himself of that negative reputation.

1. Sliding sync is intended to make things load faster every time you launch your client. Enabling it allows you to use clients that support it (eg. Element X, as well as Element with experimental flag enabled), but it does not affect other clients either way.
2. If you want to support SMS authentication, you would need to host an identity server; see https://github.com/matrix-org/sydent . Maybe you can ask @nicfab since they have some experience on phone number verification on registration.

AFAIK Misskey.io and the "Kuroneko Server" group both called police in Japan; the former likely for obstruction and cybercrimes related to spamming, the latter likely for defamation (they were defamed in the initial spam prompt as "a doxxing group"). The kid also had several opsec failures that leaked their identity. Though, I suppose that it's much harder for a more sophisticated spam wave to end this way...

@Jerry I had them on my two instances back on January 19 (however other instances claimed that such account have been there and rested dormant for 4 years); they were caught by my spam filter. Both accounts are on IP 23.95.14.239 and 198.46.149.20 with language zh-CN and email yq19820430@gmail.com. tinynews.org appears to be an SEO spam site that scrapes content from various popular Chinese platforms.

@taiyo In principle I'm still allowing Tor users to register, but with a catch: new accounts will be suspended with a message asking them to write an appeal (using the function within Mastodon) describing the purpose of the account. Same for accounts that get caught by my spam filter.

Decided to call an online friend-of-a-friend out (on short notice...) and visited this #BubbleTea #shop . Ordered a green tea #boba , and while it tastes pretty good, it's quite expensive (large "Kyoto" $8.75+tx). The place got a wall with comic books lining up the shelves and a book mural, but overall the place is a bit small.
