@pixelschubsi To clarify, right now matrix.org's version string is "Synapse 1.122.0rc1 (b=matrix-org-hotfixes,2beaad71cc)" which corresponds to github.com/element-hq/synapse/. If I recall correctly it has always used that branch; whether it has undeclared proprietary components remains to be seen, but judging by its performance I'm inclined to believe that it doesn't. cc. @fionafokus

@beardedtechguy Late reply, but infosec.exchange does have a Matrix server for its Mastodon users...

@QuadRadical There are only 2 public ones on my list (servers.joinmatrix.org): the official transfem.dev, and @sij's we2.ee.

@brian disroot.org has not had a Matrix server for like 5 years...

@robin_kipp At least in my experience of the public federation, Conduit (+ conduwuit) is used more than Dendrite, though we'll see whether transferring it to Element means more maintenance... @etienne Matrix rooms are distributed (each server has a copy), whereas XMPP group chats are centralized on one server. While this offers improvements in availability (in theory), it is technically more complex and does come with performance penalties. (I wrote joinmatrix.org.)

I do not think it is easy for to balance between its individual userbase using it as a community-like Discord alternative and its technical leadership pitching it as a commercial Slack alternative, but is clearly not trying to either (or they really suck at communications). At this point I can only hope that the public federation gradually move away from New Vector (not impossible, seeing that matrix.org is avoided in many active rooms) to safeguard its own future.
