@politicalfinger If searching your account on various instances does not result in "this profile has been hidden by the moderators..." or "account suspended" then your account is not "throttled." However, do note that the Fediverse' decentralized nature can be difficult to work with. If you want new followers, you might want to put appropriate hashtags in your posts and also interact with other users. Also see https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-get-more-followers-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse/. Remember: you have to give something to get something back.
@WanderingInDigitalWorlds Oh yeah, that makes me recall the whole e30e/e98e repository, where a key complaint by its opponents is that such projects, entirely made for fun, deprives other serious projects of exposure; see https://iliana.fyi/blog/e98e/. At this point stars are just a "clout" thing to put on someone's resume and not an indicator of software quality...
@McCrankyface On one hand the press has a tendency of over-interpreting "stats" (like MAU counts from instances, which are not accurate) to infer a drop in popularity, instead of actually trying to use Mastodon; on the other hand it's also true that having to manually discover content is a non-starter for many, and it's not intuitive either. Still, the rest of the talk (https://text.npr.org/1222640152) mentioned how social media has become political identities, which I find important.
@Beclfc I wouldn't say Mastodon had any mainstream appeal to begin with, it has always been a niche thing, save the small blips due to Twitter exodus, most of which didn't stay long.
@Steve No, the message is "you have blocked..." not "an admin from (your instance) has blocked..." as per https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/blob/3bdfa3eb4c8e4ec16bff03928a5a8073e4d6e494/app/javascript/mastodon/locales/en-GB.json#L555-L557. (Besides, pretty unlikely for .online to suspend .social...) Also cc. @Lesdondons. So unfortunately @cowboycatranch you might've personally blocked the entire domain at some point (but seems that you no longer block them now). Note that some UIs are/were a bit deceptive about this and call it "mute (domain)" when it really should be "block (domain)."
@jpm Oh yeah, I remember Flickr threatening to delete photos past 1000 for free accounts after Yahoo sold it to SmugHug... AFAIK they still haven't actually deleted any photos (I think they might've bragged about that fact sometimes), but at that time I panicked and downloaded photos in a scramble (which I might've lost during evolution of my devices)...
@doskel Reject podcast, embrace FM radio... I just have NPR in the background and get news from All Things Considered...
@gkmizuno Ah, my apologies, I've not researched thoroughly about the price range and was overestimating the rural-ness (like the Sea of Japan side)... I guess things are different now that it has become a trend among westerners? Regardless I still think that maintenance of such a house is a problem, given their age and material, as well as the changing climate. I didn't really consider paperwork an issue, if you're dedicated enough then you'll get through.
@Log3overLog2 I got that too a few months ago, it was NOAA commissioning Gallup to ask me about whether I've ever fished in my state (New Jersey)...
Back in downtown #Montreal . This #sculpture , a mainstay in front of McGill University, is La Leçon by Cédric Loth. I've always thought it just depicts the modern #student life, but it was the first time I clearly saw the screen, which says "Steve Jobs is dead," and that the pear logo on the laptop means "gullible" in French. Is it a ridicule of the current generation in the #attention economy, or a jab at modern #technology ?
@cowboycatranch The explore tab shows the most interacted posts (with time decays) as seen from your instance (mastodon.online); it is not personalized to you. (You can also hide the page in the web UI.) However, do note that your choice of instance (size, follow reach, blocks it applies, blocks it receives...) and chronological factors could very well determine what you can see and in some cases have similar effects to an "algorithm."
