@garretble I think it's rather similar in magnitude on Fediverse (even without the worst instances), just that it's more "out of sight, out of mind" for most people (as a result of federation mechanisms), doesn't mean others don't experience it. There are experiences from some in racialized populations claiming Fediverse is less safe than others, and as a moderator I've had to break up some fights too. (Also, Bluesky has reply control, while Mastodon still resists it...)

@politicalfinger Bluesky's "decentralized" aspect is dubious in its current implementation (btw I can't find you there), hence you can post like everywhere else, whereas on Fediverse you must work through decentralization, hence you can't apply your habits elsewhere here. The population here is also smaller and more niche. My point is that your account is not "throttled" compared to others, and I suggested using popular hashtags because your recent posts, but it could also be due to content.

Finally, the Secret Bench by Lea Vivot. A #sculpture that reminds us that #happiness and #hope is still there, right around us. There wasn't a lot of people on the street at that time (it was 10am-ish), so I wonder what the man sitting behind it at that time was thinking.

@politicalfinger I apologize for making scheduled replies, I'll reiterate my points in a longer thread right now. I shall remind you that I am an (not "your") instance administrator, and I do know what options we have to "throttle" an account, which I can tell that you're not subject to (at least locally and on some large remote instances). I shall also remind you that the fediverse has a different technical structure as well as social norms, which users from other platforms need to adapt to.

@politicalfinger The options we have are "force-sensitive," "limit," and "suspend." "Force-sensitive" marks all your media as sensitive, but you have no media to begin with. "Limit" shows a warning before anyone (including non-logged-in users) opens your profile page, as well as hides all your posts from feeds. "Suspend" is a ban if applied locally; on remote instances it hides all your posts from everywhere and prevents anyone from interacting with you.

@politicalfinger To check whether you have a "limit" locally, go to your account settings. To check whether you have a "limit" or "suspend" on other instances, search for your full handle on them, "go to profile," and check if the profile comes up normally. However, you might encounter that some instances (especially if you don't have followers from there) don't have your profile at all (that differs from "account suspended"), and that's where the technical decentralized structure comes in.

@politicalfinger This means that while you're not "throttled," visibility is not taken for granted for most Fediverse users, and you need to interact with others to develop your audience. This is further augmented by the social convention that Fediverse is different than mainstream platform such that one should be authentic, although you can argue that popular users - those who bring in large audiences from Twitter and continue to post as-is - are not following it.

@politicalfinger Yes, it's normal for most mainstream users (me included) to gain traction during Twitter exodus and see it slow otherwise, that's just platform dynamics. I have not had significant growth of engagement, and most of my posts have less than 10 interactions (though some more), despite whatever my follower count says. But I'm not unhappy about it, I'm not chasing engagement, so are many who choose here instead of other platforms.

@politicalfinger For hashtags, consider using those that people actually follow - such as generic terms like #politics or #podcast , current topics, etc. - instead of trying to invent some yourself. See trending hashtags in the Explore tab as well (but be relevant). There are also some bots (especially Newsmast) that boost posts in common hashtags.

@politicalfinger Finally, I don't blame you for not understanding the conventions - a major complaint of the Fediverse is how users are expected to learn fully on their own that this is not any other platform - and discoverability has been an ongoing issue. And you're certainly free to go to Bluesky if you believe engagement numbers are more important. I am only inviting you to be open-minded about the Fediverse (and not go into admin conspiracy theories), that's all.
