The sliding sync feature (in development and subject to homeserver support) also greatly improves performance. On PC you may use Element Nightly (or enable lab features through a client config); on mobile you may use Element X.

@MindmeshLink I'd say Matrix/Element still has the best shot in replacing Discord currently, despite some flaws, noting that Element has an interface similar to Discord. Though, for them to actually replace Discord would require an overhaul of their management...
