Following this guide, I used BFG to remove some large leftover files in my website repo. You can use the tool in the same way to remove sensitive files accidentally commited to a project repo.
I HIGHLY recommend making a full copy of the git repo before starting though, juuuuuuuuust to be safe :)

git reflog expire --expire=now --all && git gc --prune=now --aggressive
git push --force
Just a simple example for the steps to take but that's the gist; would recommend reading over the BFG documentation though beforehand :)
