@noh8campaign As you may know, the constitutional law of Japan prescribes that "Marriage shall be based only on the mutual consent of both sexes" (Art. 24), which is ambiguous on the cases of same-sex marriage, and other Japanese statutes concerning marriages don't mention the gender of the marrying people.
At the level of practice, the administration offices (city governments) has been refusing to accept the marriage paper for those people.

The Tokyo high court decision on October 31st says that the current operation excluding same-sex partners is against constitution, meanwhile it didn't admit the national reparation to the plaintiffs (same-sex couples themselves).

In fact, this judgment follows the similar determinations by other courts of recent years, including the District Courts in Tokyo (for two other lawsuits), Fukuoka, Sapporo and Nagoya, as well as a case on High Court in Sapporo, while the Provincial Court Osaka in 2022 ruled that banning same-sex marriage is still constitutional.

Some social researches shows that around 70% of Japanese people now think that the same-sex marriage must/can be admitted in Japanese family law system.
