@namazso That's not as concerning though... First, tumblr did begin as one piece, not three. Second, tumblr does moderate (sure, porn ban, but they were forced into it), whereas .jp and .cloud appear to be minimally moderated (they haven't even changed their rules/ToS to reflect the new ownership!). But ultimately "keep fediverse decentralized" is wishful thinking if one wants to see mass adoption.

Many are either oversimplifying this as a funding issue or making blatant assumptions on that guy's character, while missing the main point: #instances have been sold (as in the case) or shut down (switter.at) on liability grounds. The #fediverse does not operate in a vacuum, and everyone must abide by all sorts of #law . @privacat has an excellent guide on GDPR for #mastoadmin , and I'm sure there are many other #legal aspects (esp. with handling speech) to consider.
