ここでいふ「日本語」を大和言葉、すなはち上代日本語を含むものと假定すると、上代特殊假名遣ひに於ける甲類オは /wo/ だと推測される（Martin, Frellesvig & Whitman など）ので、万葉集などで古 姑 枯 故 侯 孤 児 粉のいづれかの假字が使はれてゐる場合、その音は /kwo/ もしくは /gwo/ だつた可能性が非常に高い。例「和やか」/nagwoyaka/ （ナグォヤカ）
なほ、外來語の多い現代日本語では、\sf\small\overset{\tinyグォジュンリン}{郭俊麟}などの固有名詞に「グォ」の音が現はれる場合もある。
