Nice to meet everyone who has registered on mastodon.social. Welcome!

Here at mastodon.social, the flagship server run by the founders of Mastodon, we try to accommodate as many people as possible who come to us looking for possibilities, but we cannot expand indefinitely.

Mastodon, however, is a decentralized system, where people are distributed across many servers to achieve a single network as a whole, rather than a large number of people on a single server.

Just as Twitter has difficulty in demonstrating one righteousness in having to judge all the users in the world, and just as the acquisition of Mr. Elon Musk reminded us of the various problems with relying so heavily on the ideas of just one dominant person, the same problems arise with relying on a single dependence on a server causes the same problems.

But don't worry, Mastodon already has many servers, and no matter which one you sign up for, there is a mechanism in place that allows Mastodon users to connect with each other. We are free to choose which servers to register on. Come on, find a different server and we'll disperse!

Mastodon also allows people to set up their own new servers to run their ideal community. Not all of you need to do this, but one person in every 100 or 1,000, or even 1 in 10,000 if you try harder, needs to be the one to run the server. This way, we can build a small, nimble community that can be run in a way that reflects our will. When people begin to have their own communities, Mastodon, as a decentralized system, will show its true power.
