#newsmast .social seems to now omit URL in federation, most likely on purpose. In particular, if a remote user look at any of their accounts mirroring another website's feed, all the links in bio are missing, and any links in the posts since a certain poiny would also be missing (leaving only the title, hashtags, and a header image); however, it appears fine on their instance. Are they trying to force click-throughs???
@JohnHthePoet Link embeds are not media and are not subject to the rule.
@legalquilts In "motivations" point 1 I did mention to discourage political slush content which, in my opinion, is bad usage carried over from Twitter and should be lowered. However, I do understand that there are other users out there, so there will be some leeway in enforcement.
@jnye @legalquilts Disability is always an acceptable exception to the rule, and again there is leeway in enforcement. When I thought about the rule, my assumption is that most people who post at a normal frequency already take time to do alt text, but those who post at high frequency don't (ie. image macros, SEO, etc.), so I'm seeking to reduce participation of some while maintaining that of most. Maybe the difference should be worded into the rule?
@jnye @legalquilts Would the following wording be better?
> Proper use of alt text for media in public posts is highly encouraged, whenever reasonable.
...so that the wording is not as strong, but strong enough to allow me to enforce it on the intended recipients? Of course I'll include the full rationale in the longer rule document (but again, do people actually read it...) but it shouldn't scare most people away.
@legalquilts @jnye I try to be even-handed, but especially in political posts it's very difficult to be not seen as one-sided... I mean, obvious hate speech is very easy to spot, but there are people who go out and challenge others (who think very much alike - have you ever seen a Trump supporter on this part of the fediverse?) on specifics. In most cases they get blocked, but in severe cases they get reported en masse and it always takes me like a day to figure out the appropriate response.
@DJTentMode Right, in the other threads I proposed watering down the wording a bit. For personal ramblings I couldn't care less, but I do recognize it might have an unintended chilling effect, hence the consultation.
@DJTentMode I mean, my perspective can very well be different from others, since I joined fedi in 2021 (and thus have seen the best and worst of it), Matrix (federated chat platform) a bit before that, and is involved in the moderation scene quite a bit. As for this instance, because of its generalist nature (exacerbated by the fact that it's founded during Twitter exodus), there isn't really a community either (nor do I think I can/should form one). TLDR: it's complicated.
@DJTentMode But also, because of the federated nature, an instance must also manage how others look at itself... The climate is that a lot of progressive instances look down on (and block) generalist instances as un(der)moderated because of undesired behaviour not being addressed, like reply guys etc. Now I'll not go down the rabbit hole too much (since it goes into systematic racism and whatnot, which I am still learning), but how others see you does affect what servers you can interact with.
@Woodswalked The extension appears to be abandoned, its Firefox version has been delisted this Monday, it's not open source, and the website's domain appears to be repossessed. (Though @assaf if you're still considering to update it, I encourage you to allow users to add alt text to images.)
@Woodswalked However, as per mentioned elsewhere, enforcement is proportional to the post's intended reach.
